Family Learning

Family Learning is free! It’s also fun, exiting, challenging and can change lives! It consists of workshops and courses for families to learn together – and have fun doing it!

Skills & Learning offers a wide selection of courses for Family Learning across Dorset. These courses help parents, grandparents and carers to learn with their children. Many of our courses are aimed at helping parents to support their children’s development: Early Years Foundation stage right through to Key Stage 3.

Our Family Learning courses keep parents ‘one step ahead’ of their children, so they can help with early school work. Parents and carers also have the opportunity to develop their English and Maths skills. They can work towards a qualifications. Courses such as Helping in Schools offer parents, carers and grandparents the confidence and skills to move into volunteering and the first step towards paid work in schools.

Family Learning is of benefit to both children and parents. Many schools’  report big improvements in children’s learning when families have come to Family Learning courses.

Achievement by parents and carers often has the effect of raising aspirations across the whole family. Parents progress to further training and employment, higher education and career development.

Some examples of our courses include:

  • Fun with Numbers
  • Family Language
  • PEEP
  • Share Time
  • Basic Family I.T.
