I Want to Employ An Apprentice
What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a job with training.
There is currently a fast moving reform programme underway which is changing the structure of apprenticeships and the way they are funded. We have put together a useful set of slides to give you an overview of these reforms. We can help you navigate this changing landscape – call us to talk to one of our Commercial Team.
Currently apprenticeship training involves a kit, or framework of qualifications:
- A knowledge qualification or technical certificate which helps an apprentice develop the underpinning knowledge required for their job
- A competence qualification which is equivalent and very similar to an old NVQ. This is assessed in the workplace.
- An English, Maths and sometimes ICT qualification
- Employment Rights and Responsibilities are covered and Personal Learning & Thinking Skills are developed
One of the significant reforms is the development of new employer driven Apprenticeship Standards. The new standards have been designed and written by employers and clearly state the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for particular job roles.
Some new Standards also contain a qualification requirement but many do not. English and maths skills are still required for all Apprenticeship Standards at a level appropriate for the job role. Current Apprenticeship Frameworks are being phased out and replaced with the new Standards.
Employers will work closely with Training Providers to design an apprenticeship training programme that suits their business with a shared responsibility for the delivery of off-the-job training.
When the employer and training provider feel that an apprentice has developed the required knowledge, skills and behaviours to prove they are competent in their job role, the apprentice will go through a formal End-Point Assessment undertaken by an independent organisation. Final apprenticeship certification is subject to successful achievement during end-point assessment.
